In the past, the Slovakian firefighters had the main role of extinguishing fires and spreading public awareness. Today, the spectrum of firefighting tasks has expanded considerably in Slovakia. Volunteer firefighters in Slovakia
In 2013, Interior Minister Robert Kalinak proposed a reform to allow volunteer firefighters to be more used in interventions. Their deployment will cover places where the range of professional firefighters takes 30 minutes or more and at the same time will be cheaper than hiring 2500 professionals. Around 1,500 volunteers could complement the system of professionals. The project also envisages the acceptance of 360 firefighters into the HaZZ. The fire truck Bratislava is meant to be driven by professional firefighters, but the government has extended this right to volunteers as well.
