The main function of any fire engine or pumper is to carry water to the fire scene in a water tank or to suck water in from an external source, such as a fire hydrant, a swimming pool, a lake, a river or a drop tank. Drop tanks are like huge swimming pools that can hold up to 8,000 liters of water, which is equivalent to the capacity of two water tanks. There are many types of fire apparatus, and before going farther, we must clarify that a fire engine carries water to the fire scene, while the fire truck carries firefighters and fire equipment.
The capacity of water tanks
The primary water tank is located inside the fire engine or pumper, and it holds up to 1000 gallons of water (around 3700 liters). Of this amount of water is not enough, firefighters connect suction hoses to external water supplies. A suction-line of 6-inch diameter is used to suck water inside the water tank. When water enters the pump, it hits the inner part of the impeller, which creates enough pressure to slung the water outward. Fire engines are also equipped with foam systems, which carry about 76 liters of foam. The foam tank is located in the main water tank and the blending system has the purpose of mixing the water and the foam in the needed concentration.
