Firefighting foam was invented in 1902 by the Russian chemist and engineer Aleksandr Loran. Since then, the fire foam has been responsible for suppressing small and big fires all around the world. Every fire truck is fully equipped with all the tools necessary in fire combat, and the firefighting foam is never missing. Most of the fire truck producers offer fire extinguishers and fire foams included in the fire equipment. However, these can also be purchased from other specialized producers.
How does it work?
So, what is fire foam and how does it work? This foam is made of maximum 1% surfactants, which lower the surface tension between a liquid and a solid, between a gas and a liquid and between two liquids. The other components are organic solvents, foam stabilizers, and corrosion inhibitors. The role of fire-retardant foam is to cool down the fire and to cover the fuel to prevent its contact with oxygen. Therefore, the combustion is suppressed. Firefighting foams are expelled from foam tanks through hoses at different pressures according to the needs and the type of the fire.
The importance of firefighting foams
Water had been considered the universal agent for suppressing fires and the most used element in firefighting operations. However, in early 1900, studies showed that water may be dangerous sometimes, especially on oil and gas fires. Nowadays, the firefighting foam is ever-present in fire truck production and it is a must component on fire engines. Volkan Fire is a specialized producer and one of the best fire truck manufacturers in Turkey and beyond. We believe in quality and safety. We are driven by the idea that quality and professional fire trucks can help to suppress the fires and saving people’s lives more efficiently.
