Since the 1960s since fire trucks have started to be fully equipped and developed, fire truck manufacturers have designed a few types of fire apparatus, each of it specially develops to respond to different fires. Since wildfires are very different from kitchen fires, a different type of fire engine is required in both situations. Totally, there are seven types of fire apparatus, and here is the classification.
Types 1 and 2
The first three types are designed to respond to structural fires in urban and rural areas. Densely populated areas depend on this type of fire truck, which holds up to 500 gallons of water. Type 1 has a bigger flow capacity and a Master Stream device, which is perfect for departments that must fight high-rise fires in the cities. These types have a big configuration and can carry up to 4 firefighters. This the most common vehicles produced by every fire truck producer and the most requested by fire departments all around the world.
Types 3 and 4
These two types have four wheels to make driving easier, especially over rough terrain. Type 3 can carry 4 firefighters, while type 4 can carry a maximum of 2 firefighters. These vehicles are required by NFPA to hold a minimum of 500 gallons of water.
Type 5,6, & 7 Engines
These vehicles have a smaller truck body configuration, specially designed to respond to wildfires and fires on rough terrains. The smaller body allows to carry between 50 to 400 gallons of water and the vehicle is more maneuverable and accessible.
